The wonderful example of the London 2012 Olympic Games should be an inspiration to all business owners and managers. Seven years ago when London was announced as the venue for the Olympic Games in 2012, a great deal of planning was begun. This was not just by LOCOG (the London Organising Committee) who have produced and delivered stunning venues and events but by the sporting federations and not least the athletes themselves. Many young athletes decided they wanted to compete at the London games and set about planning to achieve their goals. Naturally they had coaches with the experience and abilities to help them from a technical point of view but also many other aspects such as nutrition, and psychologically. We just have to look at the Rowing and Cycling events to see how the athletes were bought to a peak for their events.
These are also lessons that business owners and managers can take on board. Good detailed planning is a prerequisite for any business whether this is from a strategy point of view or planning a sales and marketing campaign. Then keeping the staff motivated over the medium term to perform and achieve the plan is achieved through coaching and mentoring. Finally as we have seen with the gold medal performances of Team GB, persistence and dedication in pursuing the goals as laid out in the plan will ensure that your business finishes first.
Although we are experiencing flat economic growth any company that develops a sound plan, has well trained motivated staff and pursues their goals with a determined and dedicated approach will develop and grow and will be in good shape by the time the next Olympics comes round.
